Hello folks,

Something I would really like to see for Plone 4 is an updated and easy
to follow installation guide, for all platforms.

We currently have an Unified Installer manual
(http://plone.org/documentation/kb/installing-plone-3-with-the-unified-installer)
and many more (http://plone.org/documentation/topic/Installation), but
I'd like to see something like
http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.1/topics/install/, a page (or set of
pages in the same manual) describing the current reccommended approach
to install Plone on all supported platforms.

It doesn't have to be be very in-deep and can refer to other docs (so we
don't duplicate contents) for further info, but contain a list of easy
steps to follow like:

1. Download this exe file to your PC.
2. Execute it and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. At the end, an icon will be created in the desktop. Click on it to
start Plone.
4. A new site with the name "Plone" is created by default, so point your
browser to http://localhost:8080/Plone/ (+info about default credentials).
...

This is just an example. Let me know what you think about it!

Regards,

Yes, once Plone 4 ships, all our install and upgrade documentation should
focus on the Plone 4 way of doing things, (ie. "edit this line of your
buildout.cfg and run buildout to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.0.1") and the other
upgrade/install docs should be present, but treated as old support material
that we keep around if people need it.

(Haven't looked at things lately, so this might already be the case? :)

Unfortunately this is not the case yet.

http://plone.org/documentation/kb/installing-plone-3-with-the-unified-installer,
as its name indicates, still focus on Plone 3, but changes to update
it for Plone 4 are likely to be minor. I'd definitely designate Steve
for this task, since he's the one in charge of the Unified Installer
AFAIK.

Anyway, what I'm asking for here is not for an update of the current
installation docs, but more for a new doc featuring a short, clear and
to the point list of steps to install Plone on every platform (using
the appropiate installer for each one).

Thanks for your reply,

An example of what I'm proposing:
http://www.catapultsolutions.net/resources/installing-plone-3-2-1-using-the-windows-installer.html

Something like this, for all installers/platforms and perhaps with a
pair of screenshots, would be enough.

I'd be happy to help with this, but I'll be tied up until after Plone
Symposium East.
